To earn certification under one of the LEED® Green Building Rating System developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), a project must meet specified prerequisites and earn a minimum number of credits in designated areas of sustainability (including energy savings, water efficiency, and improved indoor environmental quality).
As part of USGBC’s ongoing research and evaluation of ideas for further development of LEED rating systems, new credits are being developed and made available for pilot testing. During the pilot phase, projects can earn credits that will be counted in the Innovation and Design/Innovation and Operations category. Based on feedback, a pilot credit may transition into the main rating system credits or prerequisites (after USGBC member approval), may require further revision, or may be removed if it is deemed ineffective.
The initial Pilot Credits are: Life Cycle Assessment of Building Assemblies and Materials, PBT Source Reduction: Dioxins and Halogenated Organic Compounds, Medical and Process Equipment Efficiency, Innovative Ventilation, and Preliminary Integrative Project Planning & Design.
