Applications are due August 23, 2010 for HUD’s recently launched $100 million Sustainable Communities Regional Grant program. The grants will be used to support “regional planning efforts that integrate housing, land use, economic and workforce development, transportation, and infrastructure investments in a manner that empowers jurisdictions to consider the interdependent challenges of economic competitiveness and revitalization; social equity, inclusion, and access to opportunity; energy use and climate change; as well as public health and environmental impacts.”
There are two funding categories – one for regions preparing plans for sustainable development and one for regions to refine existing plans and prepare plans to implement such existing plans. Regions with populations of less than 500,000 will receive at least $25 million of the awarded grants. More information is available here.
